How many times have you out there had the flu?

I, luckily have only had it a few times in my life, but I know others that have it constantly. I was just curious to see how many times you have experienced the flu.

Surprisingly I never had the flu before. I'm not sure why. I never taken a flu shot before, but I'm happy I never got the flu. I heard it's not a good experience.

I'm guessing about 5 - 10 times, although I haven't got hit by it in years now.

Many times as a kid, but kids are always feverish and barfing anyhow, right?
One really bad one my first year in Japan(the Hong Kong flu! It was dreadful!) and the last time was 7 years ago. A bad flu hit all of Asia that winter and everyone was down for a week or so.

I have had times with a fever and vomiting and being bed bound but from what I have heard of the actual flu then I can't recall being that sick ever. I have heard you feel totally weak almost like you were hit by a truck and lots of issues. If you count like the 24 hour thing or maybe 48 hour bout of something then I would say 5-10 but from what I have heard is included with the flu when they talk about getting the flu shot I do not remember ever having anything that bad.

I do not trust flu shots either. I think they weaken the immune system. That is my opinion and not trying to claim it as fact but I have not gotten one in a very long time and have been fine as opposed to several people I know who have gotten flu shots and then got sick from them one way or another. I have not even called in sick for work for any issue related to a flu like sickness.

Guess some people are just lucky.

Every year I hear people rushing out to get flu shots. It's $70 a pop in Japan, and although a person only needs one for it to be effective, money-grubbing doctors here recommend getting two. Also, the flu shots are only effective for a short period(2 months or so) and this year one flu went around in February so all those that got their shots in early December caught it. I agree with Hmiller- as he said above, NOT getting the shots can boost you immunity and a flu isn't going to kill a healthy young person who has a strong immune system. If you are weak, elderly or working with a lot of children it may be a good idea to get one though. I take precautions which a rebasically common sense- wash my hands as often as I can, avoid sick people and try to properly ventilate my rooms(I teach university classes). For one's own good, maintaining a healthy diet and getting enough sleep will boost your immune system so that you may not even catch the flu should yuo be exposed to it. I haven't had one in about 8 years now.

I am not sure if I mentioned it here or not but people are around germs all the time and it is only when the conditions are right that you actually get sick from them like poor eating habits or poor sleeping habits for example.

And even if your resistence is lowered due to circumstances beyond your control (like staying ot all night dancing salsa!) you can take proper percautions to avoid some of those germs by washing your hands as often as possible with anti-bacterial soap and avoiding crowds or sick people.

I heard that antibacterial soap is really not that much better than regular soap for killing germs and that both do a good job of that.

Anyone know if that is true? I don't want to claim it to be but I am sure I heard it on a news report or a program like it.

My brother seems to swear by it and he spends a lot of time in the wilderness.

I am not saying the antibacterial soap is not worth it but I am just wondering if it is something companies just throw on the label to make people think "Wow this is so much better than regular soap!" when there is little difference.

Companies are shifty to make money. Mad

Maybe some companies ARE using it as a marketing scheme, but if it's getting people to wash their hands more frequently, what the heck!

Over here in Asia, where we have a whole slew of funky diseases(bird flu, SARS, to name a couple) people jump at any product with the key words "anti-bacterial" on the label! Rolling Eyes

But no one likes being lied to. There are some people who just don't care and won't wash regularily at all. Sad
