I'd like to hear some reactions to Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich's
emergency order of 1 April requiring pharmacists in that state to fill oral
contraceptive prescriptions or face disciplinary action.

What are the disciplinary actions?

Incredible. APhA and others had better fight this in IL state legislature
and all other available means. He's removed any professional judgement or
input from the pharmacist to dispense these drugs. There's probably a
lawsuit out there just waiting to happen, where the governor himself is sued
by a patient who was dispensed the medication "with no delays, hassles, or
lectures." Isn't patient counseling a necessary delay?

"But Blagojevich, surrounded by abortion rights supporters from around the
country, said his reading of the conscience clause was that only physicians,
not pharmacists, can invoke it."

"Our regulation says that if a woman goes to a pharmacy with a prescription
for birth control, the pharmacy is not allowed to discriminate who they sell
it to and who they don't," Blagojevich said. "No delays. No hassles. No
lectures. Just fill the prescription."

These right-to-my-way-of-life-only nuts should have a right to do or not do
what they want. It would only be fair, however, if the have to have big
signs on their stores saying so. These signs should be the size of letter
grades in Los Angeles County used to grade restaurant hygiene. Then I can
boycott them the way they boycott potential customers.

Our country is not divisive enough yet.

I read the article too. It's certainly a matter of the governor
overriding IL state drug laws. What's next?
