I think most people who are able, take the plan their employer offers. I am in the position of choosing plans for our company. We have to take less and less benefits every year to keep the costs down. We only have 15 employees but we provide 100% of the cost. Every time we take a plan where the co-pay goes up a few dollars, the employees view it as a "cut in benefits" even though our costs are still going up. I see no win in this sitiuation.

In Japan, all citizens are required by law to be covered under the national health care scheme. It is calculated based on your salary- the more you make, the more you pay. When you go in for a doctor's visit, you pay 30% of the total cost, the insurance covers the rest. The elderly used to pay only like 10% but I believe it was raised to 20% last year. All ambulance service is free and hospital stays dirt cheap, so you see people calling up 119 (the 911 in Japan!) and hopping in an ambulance for a sprained finger, and people going to the hospital for colds, headaches and simple cases of overeating.

In my country (Moldova) the health insurance is paid by the employers. If you don't work, you can buy the insurance (it costs about $45 a year), but it isn't obligatory. Medical insurance was implemented recently - few years ago and both people and doctors are discontented with it. The patients - because the insurance covers a small range of medical services and the doctors treat better the patients who don't have an insurance (because in this case a patient pays directly to the doctor). The doctors are discontented because they earn less. In general, medical insurance is a novelty for our country, that is why people don't fully understand if it is good or bad.

I think anyone would do that if those services were free. Smile Have you done that yourself?

cocodrilo, I heard that in Japan you actually pay your doctor when you are well and you don't when you are sick. Something about if you are ill then it is as if the doctor was not doing his job or something. Is that true or something like it?
